first of all, nobody and nothing can see shit in absolute darkness. cats can see at night because there IS some light and their eyes have some special refractory pigmented layer or whatnot that serves as a mirror and multiplies avaliable light .. or so i remember from the days when i actually read interesting stuff about animals.
starlight might ot not be enough for cats to see but in a closed box or room without windows cats can see exactly squat.
secondly, even if this was true and this boy had reflective eyes it would be far more likely a case of bilateral retinoblastoma, once called 'amaurotic cat eye'. it's true evolution is a wicked and inventive lady but i highly doubt this sort of stuff can just happen like that, overnight.
