I actually want it to take place during the era of Modern Japan. So much history and events took place from 1600's to early 1900's . It would be a shame if we don't get to play in that era .
Maybe a samurai who's lord is assassinated by the creed.
The story could be about him becoming a ronin and ushering in the age of imperial Japan by hunting down the Assassins and inadvertently empowering the Templars.
I'm just spit balling here, I'd like to hear other ideas.

Idea:
Set before, during and slightly after (?) The Great War (aka WW1) Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand is a Templar and is assassinated by the Assassins to foil a plot to do with a Piece of Eden and it goes from there really. You could do a DLC where Tsar Nicholas is the Sage and you have to try to save him...? But obviously you fail.
@peachypersimmon, the end of the age of samurai.
A setting like that would be as bittersweet as Red Dead Redemption's setting.
Edit; posted before WW1 idea
WW1 idea could work with some tuning, but Franz was heir apparent, and was just trying to fulfill a political obligation.
Maybe he could have been caught in the cross-fire of an Assassin attempt against one of the generals in the convoy?
You could even tie in that Russian Assassin from the chronicles series.

Maybe. Probably got in the way? It was just an idea :)
So if we were to run with the WW1 idea here...which country (countries) would the Templar be actively running? I mean I know there we're soooo many different alliances involved and in reality not everything is so black and white but in a game like AC it's important that there are clear "sides", goals, heroes and villains.
Russia: Disputed
Britain: 'Good' Templars
Germany: Assassin but becomes disputed over course of war
Ottoman empire: Neither
United States: Disputed
France: Assassin
.
The orders were separated by ideology, not nation, so mixing the sides would both make sense, and further contribute to the war being a clusterfucked mess.
I think the Templar and Assassin dispute should take a backseat.
The Creed tried to act for Serbia by offing an Austrian official, and then, much like real life, it escalated before anyone could stop it.
it did the story line with Desmond and then his other guys became boring me and my friends really only liked the actual assassin parts. Also when you go from black flag to unity you dont have nearly the same freedom like it gave you a ton and took it back. Not to mention in unity the combat punishes getting in fights making it harder to defend against 3 or more guards. The game promotes less open world and kinda makes you go on a certain path. It also does not make as much sense because every assassin after altiar already has superb fighting skill and abilities required for their success with absolutely no training. I just think the games got boring especially in unity I think black flag and the first were the only 2 I actually enjoyed.
A friend and I dicussed two AC games we'd love to see.
.
1. Ancient Rome. Like, during Alexander the Great. Gladiator matches, freeing slaves possibly, during the golden age of ancient Rome.
.
2. Ancient Egypt, exploring tombs, during the time where the pyramids were built, with Pharoahs and such.
Next AC game is Assassin's Creed Empire (current title) and is set in Egypt, but unknown time period. Some say ancient Egypt, some say a bit closer to the 20th C.
Don't ya'll think it's a little suspicious that the nazis are picked on SO HARD
Stalin killed several times more people that hitler did, in roughly the same time period. The bolsheviks before him killed SIXTY million. Mao killed SIXTY million as well. I don't see anybody crying for Assassin's Creed: Kill the Commies!

Let's try to keep settings pre cold war.
