You can love your country and still be proud of your southern heritage. I am from Long Island but lived in southern Georgia for a bit (Tift county) and many of the folks down there have a sense of pride for their home that is rarely seen up here. Here in New York we spend a lot of time belittling and pointing judgemental fingers at the people living south of the Mason-Dixon line but I have never experienced a more open and welcoming attitude than when I lived there. I know the racism issue will be screamed loudly but I know just as many racists here in NY (particularly in Brooklyn) as I did in Ga.

I'm from the other end of NY where the prisons and wind farms are. I see a lot of the dual flags. The "rebel" flag around here more states something to the effect that you are only willing to put up with so much crap before you stand up and fight for what you believe. I've traveled
In general, people in the deep south actually do tend to perform worse in nearly any standardized test (I would be suprised if they had lower average iq as well); they're years behind everyone else when it comes to being progressive, and that friendliness vanishes instantly often to be replaced with hatred if you are a: homesexual, atheist, or often, black. Not to mention nearly everyone is a bible thumping idiot. You couldn't pay me to live in the bible belt.

But in repose to both of you, stories about gays and atheists losing their jobs or being disowned by their families are all too common. It's social exile. I only hate the bigoted ones guest, because they are so close-minded and unaccepting of others. And I think a lot of them are bigoted.
