Here's a simple rule of thumb: if the character looks Japanese, cast them as Japanese. If the character looks White, cast them as White. Japan gets this, the SJWs here in the states that are offended on behalf of the Japanese do not.
or just you know do whatever the hell you want. look at the attack on titan live action, they casted all asians for a variety of characters that were originally other races if I remember correctly. nobody should care. the only people that care are people getting offended on behalf of people that aren't
Japan doesn't have racial diversity, especially since they've always been so isolated from foreigners. I'm not sure if there are any non-Asian actors in Japan. So of course no one there would complain.
People from the countries usually don't give a shit about people doing things from their culture. Japanese people don't care if you cosplay, dress in a kimono, or learn the language just because of anime. People like to share their culture, if we don't share it the world is just going to grow more separate and racist.
I grew up in an area that's mainly Hispanic and black people, and I've developed habits from both because of the exposure. None of the mexicans give a shit when I want to get a bag of durros, and none of the black people care when I use slang like on fleek.
Good example of an exception to this is some native Americans, specifically Oklahoma Cherokees. A lot of us don't want outsiders to know anything about us and somehow think it's ok to then get mad when we are depicted horribly wrong.
I recall reading that the creator of ghost in a shell wanted Major to not be japanese but someone slapped a japanese name on her so that's why SJWs are being bitchy about it.
Well, in the original movies, it was said that she was a rather common model of cyborg that was made awesome by a few modifications and the braincase within, and if you're going to make a mass-production female full-cyborg body, what would be more likely to sell than having it modeled on an actress who is both skilled and attractive?
Like how there's weeaboos here in America, people in Japan are sort of fond of Western countries, since they're exotic and cool. They see asian actors all the time in their media, so it's not surprising that they'd be pretty okay with seeing a non-asian actor as the lead in the adaptation, especially one that's pretty famous.
You guys, normally I would be pissy? But Maj. Kusanagi's shell in the original story is explicitly stated to be a caucasian shell. She chose it so she'd fit in better in the white parts of Hong Kong.
It reminds me of the time that the MFA Boston had a "try on a kimono" event in connection to one of their blockbuster exhibitions, and the whole white community was super butt-hurt and protested outside. On Facebook, the entire Japanes community--expat and otherwise--was like...what. We actually think this is great!
It wasn't just white people. The most famous picture I've seen about that is what looks to be an Indian chick holding up a sign at a Japanese woman. It was all the sjws who act as if they're holier than thou
You are right, ultimately. I suppose I was using short-hand. Most of the people I know (who work in the industry and were questioning curatorial decisions regarding the exhibit) were white. And then I saw the explosion of the incident on the internet. What was really heartening, though, was the way the public really was able to see through the controversy and be enthusiastic about the narrative presented and the opportunity to celebrate Japanese culture!
From what I've seen, most people outside of America are happy to share their culture. Hell, apparently Japanese people don't even care if westerners alter kimonos because they do it too. The only real people that seems to have issues with it are people in America, and usually people who have little to no connection to the place their race is from. Like I've seen a bunch of black people on Tumblr get mad from dreads and stuff but then they all go and celebrate " African culture " when there's hundreds of cultures in Africa, where they've never been to, which means they're culturally appropriating hard if someone going to a country and offered something is considered doing it.
