I would never want reparations. I was not a slave, and the people that owned slaves aren't alive today
Also, just because you're black, it doesn't automatically mean that your ancestors were enslaved.
Are you stupid? And shame on all you 'tards for liking it. Yes, darling, if you are a Black American with family here for at least 3 generations, your ancestors WERE slaves. We're NOT FROM THIS LAND, TF!
Sure. But they have to get in line behind women, who were treated as property for far longer throughout human history, but once that happens they can definitely have a turn. Oh, wait, sane women aren't asking for reparations because they know it's fucking stupid.
"women, who were treated as property"
They weren't treated like property. Women and property existed at the same time, and they weren't treated as though they were the same thing.
@garlog Um, I think wives are literally listed next to things like livestock in biblical references to property, which is pretty far back to reference. In some cultures in history, they've been traded for and sold. I think you completely missed or intentionally ignored my point to pick a fight though. What I said was that you don't see modern, non-property women demanding reparations for what some of their ancestors went through, because asking for reparations for something you didn't experience from somebody who didn't do it just because trying to change your country through legislation is hard is really stupid.
Yeah for almost 100 years? Reparations now is stupid but putting women and slavery in the same boat?

Slaves were considered property when it was still legal here. Women are considered property to this day by some people and is still practiced that way. It's not the same, but it's the same idea of seeing humans as property for someone to control
I don't know if I want in on this crazy mess but oh well here goes: women were beaten and yes killed if they were raped or had intercourse for being impure, men could kill a wife for cheating + other reasons, they could not own property, they were bought to be men's wives they were used as tools for family's to gain status, women in china were killed for years due to their lesser worth, ever heard of child wives?!,women were not supposed to learn to read or write, their were so many restrictions on the freedom of women throughout the ages cultures ect. and they are + were EXACTLY HALF THE POPULATION (therefore half of slaves were women) and near always the lesser half so yes comparing it to slavery is not a stretch as both parties had cruelty done onto them, but again yes they are different men and women both have suffered. rights to all people should be the goal but looking for justice of suffering for your ancestors from from the people of now is not justice & does not make equality
Woah, different guest here, reading these comments and the people who clearly done get how strange they sound..... it’s a comparison, it still happens today with women, and just cause you’ve got the label wife, dons t mean you get treated better. The point is that yes SOME black people where slaves, but not now days and people who owned them are dead. The world is moving on, and so should some of these people. Don’t keep 0aying the victim card. The world dosnt owe anyone anything, work for it yourself if you really want and need it
And this is exactly why the world is so fucked up. People want "justice" and "reparations" they want apologies for the problem, and gifts to make up for it, rather than making the tiniest of sacrifices in order to ensure the solution.

Imagine if white people did this and wore white pride shirts while doing it
There would be a blm meltdown
Reminds me of bussing a few days ago. I have my headphones on and this black homeless guy gets on the bus with a few bags of beer cans (getting money for them I assume). The bus driver lets him on for free (good guy). So he put his cans down and he's standing in the way of people being able to get on the bus so he goes "please move to the back of the bus.". Holy sht I have my headphones on and this homeless guy starts shouting "It's because I'm a Ni***r isn't it?" Over and over again holy crap I should have done something I felt so bad for the bus driver. Driver pulled over and kicked the ass out. Like ffs no, you move to the back so more people get on. They say that to everyone. Stop making things about race.
The British ruled half of my ancestors with iron fists and stole our crops and raped our women. I think several pounds of gold would make me able to live with this trauma. Then the other half were brutalized by the Kaiser. Whomever pays first shall have my forgiveness.
Why are people always showing people at their worst??
Let's not show the black student (who through tough circumstances) graduated without making it anyone else's problem. Also NO let's not show the friendly 40 something year old white neighbour... We'll show them the most racist guy we can find.
Media perpetuates stereotypes. A person reading this does not think "x number of black students" rather they just think "black people". Which is really sad.
I feel like this is going to affect how willing people will accept their prejudice and injustices and how soon everyone will be treated equally. Why bother helping people gain their rights when they are just going to use that as leverage to demand compensation?
Since the money would come from taxes, it punishes taxpayers. Even if you don't care that none of them owned slaves, and many aren't even descended from slave-owners, you have to notice that some Blacks are taxpayers. Money going to people because of their skin color means some of the recipients will be those who came to the US recently, or whose ancestors came to the US after slavery was abolished. So, this proposal taxes some Blacks to pay "reparations" to others whose ancestors were never slaves.
Well, their ancestors MIGHT have been slaves...but in Africa, and slaves to another tribe. The United States didn't *invent* that $#!+.
How about rewards of some kind to the descendants of Union soldiers who gave their lives to end slavery?
How about no rewards, and people earn their own money

The USA did not invent slavery, but they did implement the worst kind of slavery. Practically everywhere else, slaves were at least regarded as humans.

AHEM
Barbary Slave Trade.
Arab swath of the Middle East.
The Trans Alantic slave trade was childplay compared to aforementioned.
But wait, there's more!
White people, who never even started slavery, were the first to legally abolish it.

Free tuition as reparations for slavery: I don't think that's a good idea.
Are blacks disadvantaged thanks to generations of slavery, oppression, discrimination?
It's undeniable.
Pick up a copy of Race by Studs Terkel or A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn. They both offer excellent perspectives on what has driven the race issue to what it is today.
The thing is as far as what they mean by reparations is white people never stopped accumulating wealth generational aka old white slave owners profited and were able to pass on whatever physical gains (money land businesses) as well as status, upper class business owning assisted in nepotism centered economies in the south where who you knew deeply influenced how your were treated( relevance respect investments.) White men acting as gods over slaves, which history shows consistently they were treated as porperty same as livestock (hence literal peices of our constitution including the worth of slaves as slaves not people). For hundreds of years, slaves themselves not only did labor for free (lack of money land and business) they also dealt with literally being lower than an orphaned white individual as skin color was a heavy influence on obviously even once so they had an intense handicap economically, socially, and mentally ( grew up living like livestock will mess you up)
You make it sound like all white people had slaves and were rich, and that all slaves were black and all black people were slaves.
None of that is true.
Also if slaves had been counted as equal to free persons instead of three fifths of one then slave-holders would have had even more influence in government, so there's that to think about.
So the government who enslaved and built a country on the backs of black people then oppressed them for over a century after owe them nothing? No helping hand to find equal footing in a country that has consistently held them down?
This isn't a white/black concern. This is social division manifested over the history of or country.
I can get on board with this so long as collegiate students are held to standards of performance while in college
"So the government who enslaved and built a country on the backs of black people then oppressed them for over a century after owe them nothing?"
The black people whose backs the country was built upon and who were oppressed are dead, so yes. You can't owe something to the dead.

Did you know that the first person to own a black slave was black?
Well, blacks still have a lot of problems derived from the original enslavement. I'd say the government still owes them something. And what it owes is a solution, not a pretty little gift to make people like that feel better.

Slavery is not a reason to gift black people anything.
Freedom is our gift.
"Well, blacks still have a lot of problems derived from the original enslavement."
Maybe, but if you believe that then they also have advantages derived from it, like being a part of the nation that their ancestors were forced to help build.
"And what it owes is a solution"
A solution to what?
In my opinion the cons outweigh the pros. They'd probably be better off if the Europeans had just left their ancestors alone. A solution to the problems that it created. The racism still present today. The poverty and lack of education of the average person. The lack of opportunities arising from the first two, and the vicious cycle that perpetuates it.
You realize the slaves europeans got were bought from african tribes, and were prisoners from other tribes, right? They didn't just go out "catching blacks". Those slaves were slaves anyway. Racism exists in every country, not just european ones and not just white ones. Lack of education is a choice in the modern day, and because of that, poverty is as well, especially with all the college grants offered to black people. The vicious cycle is choosing not to work to get a better life and making your children grow up in the same bad situation.
And why do they choose that? The subculture that currently exists is the result of a couple centuries of mistreatment, oppression, and racism. Racism that is partly still present.

Racism may exist due to that oppression, but that is long gone. Just because your race suffered centuries ago, doesn't mean that you NEED something to help forgive that.
Again, as aforementioned, freedom was our gift. We need nothing more and our behavior is our problem.
Dude, seriously? I mean, yeah, that's a very healthy approach to take, but to the best of my knowledge that behavior does not come from your native culture. It was artificially created as a result of slavery and its aftermath, and that is on everyone who did it, and currently perpetuates it.

how in the nine realms of fuck does anyone perpetuate slavery?
Not slavery, the subculture that developed as a result. Poorer, less opportunistic, educated, more prone to petty crime, etc...

Black people alway look for the easy way out. If dealing drugs and killing people is the easy way instead of doing actual work, then trust and believe they will and already have.
This is why welfare queens, and low black representation exist as it does. It comes and goes back around to black men and women.
Do you think that welfare existed before modern times?
I believe black couples were still producing children until they got something that would take them up the social ladder.
Doesn't matter. You magically stick some black guy from before slavery in today's society, how similar will he be to the ones of today?

That makes no sense.
Before the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, black people were almost exclusively in Africa
You're asking to bring an African tribal to modern times..
Yeah, it's hard to find a good example. Basically, cultures shape each other, and subcultures. That blacks tend to be how they are is on the whites. Most of whom are now dead. Remedying this will take effort from both parties, understanding the cause, but not dispensing blame.

This problem is almost unsolvable. Giving black people more will make them even more entitled, while leaving them to their devices while cause a new civil war. If this is to end, we need to end the perpetuation in black culture. Rap needs to stop being so wrong and banned. Black vernacular needs to be breeded out or taught out. Welfare queens need to be knocked off of welfare, and child lotteries need the parents removed if failure for family care is obvious.
Also, just because you're black, it doesn't automatically mean that your ancestors were enslaved.
