There is commitment bred from a trust and respect, demonstrated value which you grow to cherish and cultivate- then there is a commitment from the fallacy that by putting effort into a thing we give that thing value. It takes simillar effort to cut and polish a turd as it does a diamond, but most people will prefer the diamond and be unhappy with the turd at the same cost. Use your heart and your head to see if what you're polishing is a diamond in the rough or a dried up dookie. People love each other as best they know how, and put in as much effort as they are willing to meet the others needs. It isn't their fault if they can't meet your standards and it isn't yours that you have things you need to be happy. Be realistic, follow your heart and your head, don't throw away a diamond because it needs a little bit of polish or has a few flaws in it; and don't wear a poo around your neck just because it's sparkly.

It works the other way around, too.
