But if the order should be I-A-O, why is it weird to say "dad and mom"?

i have never in my entire life heard someone say it in that order, but i suppose it would be like saying "my foot and my hand", as in it doesn't sound as weird as some other examples because people probably tend to say it more.

okay holy shit. i've never really though about the adj. rule, but as a writer, (and i literally had to look through all my recent shit to confirm it) but I follow it! (although sometimes I switch the first and third one around, like Her New and Beautiful Red Stilettos) But I really think this is freaking cool!

That is a different vowel sound... notice your mouth is closed more when you say the oom and then opens wide to say pah. Thats part of it but not all.
