I'm all for banning eating dogs and cats but where's the line? When will people ban eating cows or chicken? PETA is already pushing towards that, so what's the line?
The thing is they sometimes torture the poor dogs before they kill them, due to the belief that the adrenaline will make them taste better (it doesn't). Even with cows and chickens, I would want them to be treated humanely.
holy heck. this whole dog/cat meat thing makes me sick to my stomach, seeing them caged like farm animals.
before you ask me, "what's the difference? why would you eat a cow and not a dog?"
tell me, when was the last time you shared a special moment with a cow as a friend to be cared for and loved instead of something to be raised to eat eventually?
friend or food? that is the line.
also, i understand that some of y'all might have had a cow, pig, or chicken friend at some point, but you likely ate/will eat it when it died/will die. You really don't think that about dogs or cats. see a cow when you're out and about? "hey that's a cute cow, a shame i might eat it later." see a dog when you're out and about? "hey that's a cute dog. i want to play with/pet it."
unless you're vegan. then just... ignore both of my comments.

Maybe I do want to eat dogs I see on the street, you don't know me

But whoa, that was not the point i was trying to make at all. I think cows are just as cute as dogs. my point was that the difference is in whether you form a bond with an animal as a friend and companion for life or you form a bond with an animal thanking it for its (probably) inevitable sacrifice.
also i don't choose what animals die, god does

also i do not condone the keeping of any farm animal in cages, they should be made as happy as possible before we slaughter them

I would condone the same thing, but then beef would cost 100$ a patty due to the extra food, space, and care required to make sure my dinner lived a happy life. Murder cows, not my wallet.
well, that's a fundamentally economic and human way to look at it... why don't we just communism and make it cheap anyway??? very good idea right here mmm yes
Who are we to tell them what they should and shouldn't eat based on our ideals of what animal should be friend or food? If an organization from china came over to US farms and put a ban on the killing and eating of cows and chickens, we would lose our minds. It is not our business what animal another culture calls livestock. I do believe, however, all animals, livestock included, should be treated in life and death with respect. So ALL farmers should be held to a higher standard, America included. I lived and worked on a family farm, to say that we raise them to die and did not form the same bonds as your normal household pet is laughable. I named our pigs, hens, roosters, and milking cows. I loved and respected them, and I prayed over each one, thanking them for their sacrifice. But that is not the norm, farms are ran like factories with no regard for the lives of their animals. We need to take a look at ourselves before we start wagging our fingers at someone else.
What about traditional Aussie auctions where people buy "livestock" to eat, breed etc? How is this any different to the dogs and cats, which I believe are just animals part of their traditional dishes? Its just in Western Countries, eating dog/cat goes against the grain - but aren't they all just animals at the end of the day? Are they not the same?
I'm okay with people eating dogs or cats, it's their culture and it's just what they do, just like we eat cows and pigs and so on. However, all animals should be treated ethically, not caged like these dogs are. Also I think there's a Chinese belief that dogs taste better when tortured beforehand, which is just disgusting. But speaking of bad treatment, a similar argument could be made against western countries and our shitty treatment of chickens, cows and pigs. It's kind of hypocritical that some American activists protest eating dogs but not the fact that chickens are kept in tiny cages, fed with steroids and killed when they stop laying eggs.
The big differenc is, cows and chickens are stupid animals bred to be raised for food. Dogs are bred to be our companions and friends. I sometimes wonder if mankind's greatest achievement was domesticating the dog. Seeing these puppies being carted around and their expression showing that they're wondering what's going to happen to them breaks my heart.
