It depends on how you look at what was said. If you view down syndrome as a curse, that would be correct. But if you view it as "I hope your child is born with this so that you can understand what it is like to deal with the joys and challenges everyday, to have someone you love be affected by this and then watch someone make fun of it as though it isn't something that changes the course of both the child and families lives.." then his response of them having a short life expectancy isn't even remotely dark humor, he is mocking a person who loves their child and may not get to see them celebrate another birthday. There are "good days" and "bad days" for parents of children with downs, severe autism, etc. good days they see their kids connecting and making progress, laughing and enjoying life. Bad days they don't want to come home and see someone talking about how funny it is watching them struggle and reducing their anguish to a gag. Dark humor isnt the same as being an asshole.
I mean, that was pretty much the big talking point in the last US election/debates, the driving point on both sides of Brexit, and the trending hash tag in Britains recent snap general election. So it must work for someone.
