I think it shows an interesting part of Batman's mind. He doesn't believe himself to be Bruce Wayne anymore. He is the Batman in name, action, and belief. His alter-ego has become his main one.

And it shows how damaged he is. How his obsession is consuming his soul, making it impossible for him to ever live a "normal" life. People like Superman and Wonder Woman, they aren't normal. Being a superhero is in their DNA. It isn't in Batman's. And it will eventually destroy him.

It's shown in pretty much ever Batman incarnation. Wayne is the disguise. He IS Batman, through and through.

you fool. you buffon. you jester. The lasso works whether or not someone is touching it with skin. Bruce legitimately thinks of himself only as batman, and Bruce is his mask.
