My research seems to indicate that the Ohio and Mississippi rivers are number one and two worst polluted in the US as of 2016.
In the 1960's, I'm led to believe that it was the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland Ohio. It was so badly polluted that the water caught fire.
I don't have numerical positions, but the next two that are usually spoken of are the Hudson in NYC and the Charles in Boston.
The Charles River was so famously polluted that the song Dirty Water was written by The Standells about it and the poor state of the city in the 60's .
