We have those in New Mexico and they're called ghost crosses. They're white crosses placed where a pedestrian was killed (if they were on a bike they put white bikes instead).
yeah there’s a lot of corn fields here so it would be hard to track that one cross down.

In Florida, there's little signs that say "Drive safely" every so often where people have died
The families are allowed to decorate them with flowers, plushies, etc.
EDIT: they also say "In memory of..." And then the passed ones name
Mostly because of cost. Even when done really well you'd still be piecing in something not originally part of the road. This would wear just like a crack in the road and quickly become a pot hole. So now not only do you have the cost of the red square but you just quadrupled the cost of maintenance on that road. I suppose you could paint the square but the size needed to be recognizable while traveling at speeds 45mph or greater would need to be around 3-4 ft square. The paint would make the road slick, especially int he rain, just like the lines and stripes do already. Instead of preventing an accident you're now the cause of someone hitting that patch and loosing control. It'd be better just to place small awareness signs along side the road where possible.
Where i grew up we had a "turn of death", a bend in an alley with a cross on almost every tree because there were so many fatal accidents. Guess at one point it started to dare the kiddos to see just how fast they could take it... I suggest mandatory safe driving trainings instead with each vehicle you register to raise risk awareness/ show where it starts slipping out of control and what to do in that case. Also: just watch the fucking road instead of onboard entertainment/ smartphones/ your babbling passengers (and dont be afraid to tell them to shut the hell up because you need to concentrate).
I'm not. I vet my drivers and I make damn sure I tell my friends to stop fucking off if they're driving bad. Or I'll just straight up tell them to give me the damn wheel. In any case, I'm almost always the squad driver (because I can fit the most people).
When my kids were in drivers Ed they had to make a map of the city showing the distribution of the accidents of the previous year. Actually they started with a map and marked locations with types of accidents using different color pins. Made them more conscious of locations where the different kinds of accidents happened: single car lost control Went off the road, multiple vehicle accidents where the intersections were dangerous, etc.
