I felt like this had something to do with competition with other women and I was partially correct.

I feel like my husband is way more attractive than me. Definitely more physically fit...I use that as motivation to stay fit though. His chest/arms will get a little bigger or his stomach will get tighter and I'm like "well shit..now I gotta go work on my butt." But it feels good in the end :)
This comming from Maxim? I'm calling bullshit.
Sure. Everyone, men and women, all have their preferences. But a blanket statement of this nature coming from this particular magazine? Shenanigins.
I agree but Maxim only wrote an article about the study as did several other websites. The study was conducted by Florida State University but they only observed 113 newly married couples.
113 frankly not enough to draw relevant conclusions. It may be enough for a pilot study to indicate the validity for further investigation on a broader scale.
I do however have questions of concern.
Was the study published and peer reviewed?
The second question is, did they actually read the fucking thing? Further more, did they understand and accurately report the study findings?
Lastly, was it pure scientific curiosity or funded by an internet dating institution with the intention to be a thinly veiled PR piece?
Those are good questions. Here are the more scientific articles if you're interested. The first one's very short, the second is a bit more interesting.

I think maxim and the other websites partially reported the study correctly. They did leave out quite a bit though. After reading more I think this study just points out how insecure women can be and how much reassurance they can need from their spouse. Like, instead of taking that insecurity and turning it into a positive way to better themselves, they let it go to their head and wind up unhappy which has an effect their relationships. Or it could be that their spouses need to be more supportive. Either way I agree more research is needed to make such a statement...still kind of interesting though

Science with significant data is always exciting, even if the conclusions may be depressing.
