Information that shocks no one who has been in school.
The reason I love sites like Quora and Youtube so much is that you can learn what you want to know about. I've always been interested in astrophysics, but other kids like other things more. So why force them to learn about astrophysics? It's essentially useless knowledge to the general public.
Teach the kids history so they don't repeat mistakes, but don't force them to memorise names and dates. Teach them enough science to understand their world. Teach them language to interact. Teach them math up to the point that they'll use it in the real world.
Teach them worthwhile things. How to clean up after yourself, cook a meal, be a decent human being, manage your finances. Don't tell them that abstinence is the only way; the kids can and will fuck. Teach them how to be safe.
We waste many precious years of life and youth learning in this horrible way. The way to learn is to experience, not sit for six hours. This is bullshit.
The thing is History, Science, math can all be helpful. I'm not saying they will be helpful for everyone, but what about the people who don't know what they want to do? What if someone doesn't know if they want to be an actor or an engineer? They need to learn both of those things in school, so they can choose one of them. If everyone only learns the basics of everything at your school, no one will get into college, and get a further education. I agree that school shouldn't just be siting down for 6-8 hours writing notes, it should be engaging, but somethings you need to sit down and write those notes, because you're going to have to be in meetings all day at some point in your life. I don't enjoy that. I don't necessarily want to take a three hour exam at the end of my grade 12 year, and I don't think that exam should count for 80% of my grade, but I do think sometimes everyone needs sit down get out their notebook and take notes for an hour, because things like that do help you learn
I feel horrible knowing that I’ve already wasted my one life sitting in school (aka Gulag) for years. It’s never going to get better, isn’t it? Idiots have fucked over many, many generations and even more to come. Nobody will ever live life to the fullest anymore. It scares me that so many young people like myself already feel hopeless for their future, have anxiety and/or depression, and are even suicidal just because of our fucking school system.
Oh get the fuck over it. Just buckle down and learn trig and read huck finn. There will be many more things in life that you will have to do that you hate. Build some mental fortitude. The reason high school is so "restrictive" is because structure is usually (not always, but usually) needed to inculcate successful habits. What would you rather do - go to math class after lunch or go fuck around and play video games all day? Yeah, me too, but the boring thing is often whats required of you to function in society.
"Why do we have to learn this? We're never gonna use it." Probably true for 80% of the stuff on the test. It's not necessarily the practical knowledge that you'll learn that is important - it's work habits, social habits, timeline adherence, and responsibility. That's the stuff that matters later.
Most people only play so many video games because their real life (school) sucks so bad they need to escape to a fantasy realm just to feel alive. If we were allowed to only take classes based on our own interests rather than forced to take every class, we would be much happier and well adjusted individuals.
The structure of classes need not change much, just the rules governing which classes we HAVE to take. That way we still learn to sit and take notes during a meeting, but we'd be more engaged during the note taking and might actually retain the knowledge given beyond coping it onto a test/research paper at the end of the semester.
Well yeah. Of course people play video games because Video games are cooler. Thats also why people watch movies, read books, watch a TV show. Because whats happening in that thing is better than the majorities of people lives, more intense, awesome and badass than anyone's life, or just more entertaining. Thats why it's called entertainment. Because it's more entertaining than our regular lives. And I think the structure of classes need to change. We should still sometimes buckle down and do the work, but thats not all you do in reality. You should have discussions, debates, present to one another, have projects, stuff like that. I feel like the way something is taught will make a class either better or worse. Depending on my teacher I either hated or loved Science. We learned similar stuff, but one class was boring, all we did was take notes, and the other was fun, we had discussions, played kahoots, and we did take notes, it wasn't the same thing over and over again.
What knowledge is necessary to function in the real world though? The knowledge needed of a person is relative depending on what career or higher education they pursue. What happens if everyone is tought only basic math and a student wants to be an engineer? Where are they supposed to learn multiple levels of math, literally years worth of information? Is everyone supposed to spend 15 years in college for information that other countries have learned in public school? School sucks, there needs to be more of a balance between structure and freedom, standardized testing should be illegal, and students should be given more resources to help them succeed. But teaching them less or only what they enjoy is not the answer, we can't cripple our students by teaching them the bare minimum.
One reason that toddlers learn so joyfully and eagerly is that there is one or two, parents who love them and also can have patience in a one on one relationship. Do,you expect that society can afford that kid of student-teacher ratio for 12 or 14 years?

Wait... How about World Domination.
And the few that do don't seem to care.

I wouldn't put a lot faith in it.
