It's illegal because in Spain, like in most countries, any referendums have to be passed by the central government, and the one in Catalonia wasn't. So they could vote, but it meant absolutely nothing. I am against the police brutality that occurred though.

A fuckton of roads where closed by independentists during Tuesday, so it was logical they tried to open the road. They even set fire to one of the barricades that stopped a road
The border crossing was faked to draw police attention from other areas and to weaken their "enforcement" strength.
No brutality? Bullshit. I've seen the video of police stormtroopers raiding polling places and beating people for just being there.
