Nintendo makes their stuff tough as hell. They are the Nokia of gaming systems. I saw a video once where someone dropped a GameCube off a 2 or 3 story building, and it still worked afterwards.
I've seen them pull a GameCube behind a car and it still worked like a charm! I've also seen other stories of nes ,snes, and n64 surviving fires and working normally as well.
It was a SCUD misisle attack if I remember correctly and not only did it still work after, it still works to this day. It's on display at the Nintendo World Store in New York City.

(It's an older article, but I found more recent ones confirming it still works.)
All their products are probably designed to last. In the case of the Nintendo DS, it was designed to survive a 1,5 m drop

Not just designed for kids, but designed to be more portable. Nintendo seems to be real big on portability, thats why even the consoles had handles or reinforced plastic on the sides and corners of the cases. You could take your Nintendo consoles to your friends house every day for 10 years and it works flawlessly, pick up an xbox 360 for 4 seconds just to move it on the tv stand and its like the damn thing falls apart.
