Just out of curiosity, does anybody know why the gregorian calendar starts the year when it does? Like, why January 1st is when it is, instead of on an equinox or solstice or other trackable celestial event?
It was decided by King Numa of Rome that it would begin in the *somewhat* religious month of January because he liked the roman god Janus which the month was named after. The romans also said that it didn't truly matter because the months would be a cycle with no actual beginning or end.
It was ultimately an arbitrary decision equal to someone saying they wanted to start the new year in September because that's when the football season starts.
