Okay I had some experiences with that, here's how to avoid that (in the braces is for really important documents):
1. Send a family member the file per email
2. Store it on a usb stick and don't keep it plugged in! (In case of getting a cryptovirus)
3.Use a cloud
(4.Print it one time, highest quality, photograph paper!( you will have a hardcopy and you can scan it))
You don't even have to send it to a friend or family member, if you have 2 emails you can just send it to yourself. I used to do that, then send it again back to the other email, save it on my computer, and save it on a USB.
I had to learn my lesson the hard way with a project I was working on for myself, not for school or anything, but what sucks is it was much larger and I lost months of work. It got me seriously depressed.
This happened to me on one occasion, and sadly, I had to repeat a year. I learned my mistake and now send copies to my friends, family, and acquaintances for good measure.
Thanks for reminding me to do a back up of my thesis. Putting it on an external and on the cloud right now. I couldn't imagine having everything completely lost when I'm so close to being done.
