For those who need context, this was at Disneyland at the 20,000 leagues under the sea submarine ride. In the begginning years of the 60’s, they would have live actors playing mermaids in the middle of the ride, but many complications arose from this. Many of the “mermaids” would get sick, teenage boys would jump to the lagoon to reach them, and it was overall a safety hazard. So they removed them. When the attraction was replaced by finding Nemo submarine voyage, the “mine” seagull animatronics took their place, relaying the same “mine mine mine” phrase over and over again.

Parts of it were very fun. They'd sun on the rocks and swim. The men trying to reach the mermaids and harass them wasn't fun, and the submarine and boats used real propellers for "realism" so the mermaids did have to be mindful of safety swimming around. They'd get sick because the water in those rides usually isn't safe for humans. It tends to be gray water (recycled sewage and run off) and is either HEAVILY chemically treated or treated very little. Because it lacks a functioning eco system, is largely stagnant, and is saturated with runoff from the rides as well as any waste from the park that makes it in- it can cause sickness, especially if you're exposed constantly.
