Well, I know this is not a very popular opinion, but I wish cars were banned in every large city, except for special needs (important deliveries, handicapped people...).

That idea has been floated before. Bam cars in major cities to cut down on pollution, eliminate traffic accidents, and increase walkability. I don't think it could work, but it's an interesting thought.

If we had better public transport, like in Japan, barely anyone would need or want to drive.

What about us country folk that have business in or near cities? What do we do?

Buses, bike paths, trains into the city.

Yeah, no. That bullshit isn't gonna fly.

Or do it like the Netherlands. We've got a great network of bike roads and everything is within reach with a bike and a bus

Japan's railways do connect rural areas, but we'd need about 12 times the railways they have or more

Not worth it. It's a 30 minute highway drive to work, no way in hell am I gonna bike that.

That's what a bus or train is for.

I'd prefer keeping my autonomy.

For a 30 minute drive? Not happening.

You take your bike on the train, get off close where you need to be, and bike the rest of the way.

Unless you live in an area with no public transit (that you don't have to schedule a week in advance) and no trains except for a scenic and freight, I'm not walking five hours to work and not biking either.

That is my exact situation. Live in the sticks, but business in the city.

I think America's suburban areas make mass public transit difficult. People who live out there are invariably NIMBYs, and will probably refuse any sort of train or bus to their neighborhood.

Can you really call it a neighborhood when my nearest neighbor is an eighth of a mile out?

I guess if the residents call it a neighborhood it is one, but I was speaking more broadly.

I live two miles from the nearest main road and my driveway alone is 1/10 of a mile long needless to say without my car(s) I'm stuck at home. Just to the nearest town is six miles away and my job is 13.

It would be possible for every city if personal vehicles (bicycles ) were more compact and public transport was more convenient.

You can barely see a couple miles...in the country that has a quarter of the world's population...but the US needs to wreck its economy due to,greenhouse gases.
