you can record dreams with the same technique. visual information in dreams are like real visual sensory perception. the brain save it in the same data format if you want to say it like that. there are already experiments done with dream recording :) it's not really good, but seems to work (too with thoughts and visualisation of stuff)

I'm pretty sure that'll come along the way... Apparently what they do is use EEG to see which zones have been activated and by some magic that goes way above my head they reconstruct the images. So if you sleep with electrodes and record everything, you'll be able to reconstruct your dreams! (not today though because it's still costly af but maybe tomorrow)

Couldn't you technically record which electrodes fire off, then re-fire those electrodes to re-live your dream?

@timebender25 they already develope such a thing. scientists already have done it to a level that they could draw a single "pixel" into a brain of a human. but it machines for such thing are really big and expensive & they are not really developed enough to really render pixel sprites or even 3d stuff. but it will come in the future like you see it in sword art online - this stuff exists already to a specific level :) they developed a game where a human needed to navigate through a "gameworld" just by "see" which way he need to walk by stuff he saw "inside his head" - basicly a bright light flash. i don't have a better source but here you go http://www.washington.edu/news/2016/12/05/no-peeking-humans-play-computer-game-using-only-direct-brain-stimulation/
