The ones who get and move the ivory are general poor locals. They are paid less than 1/5000 the value on the open market by fences who have had them do the most dangerous part of the job. They generally aren’t evil people. Some don’t grasp the whole issue. Many do, but if given the choice between feeding their family and participating in poaching they choose their children and loved ones over the animals. I’m not saying it’s ok or justified- I’m saying it is easy to judge from a position of privilege. I’m also saying that there’s a fundamental problem underpinning poaching, root social causes that this doesn’t address. It’s just another example of laws to punish the poor but not offer a way out.
I own lots of Ivory heirlooms. I doubt that I'll be inprisoned. Maybe just stop this backward continent killing precious animals. Most "Africans" are still animals themselves..... I can hear your leftie buzzing and tut tutting haha.
