It could be getting a flea and tick bath, or it could have climbed into someone's engine compartment and needed to have to oil washed off. There are reasons for bathing cats. It's just not done as often as dogs.

If you have a kitten away from it’s mother you are supposed to bathe it regularly so that it acquires the habit of staying clean.

Also depends on the breed. Persians need to be bathed weekly minimum.
