Killing is making something dead. Making something stop existing is a different action entirely. If something doesn't exist it can't be dead because to be dead it must first be existent. Even if it's long dust it still exists.
I mean they'd still exist. Just not as the same thing. Their bits would just be in a different form. Making them not exist would be destroying their matter rather than converting it.
