I spoke about this before but I never saw Gaston as the much of a bad guy. I mean yeah he tried to kill the beast and force marriage on Belle but if you looked at him closely it is easy to understand him and see he wasn't really that bad.
For starts he was a military man who fought in war that was more gruesome than wars we have now. So he might of been a slight traumatized by it. He was finally out and wanted to settle down and have a family. He wanted not the normal idiot girls he wanted someone who he could have a conversation with someone who he felt would take care of him. You can tell by how he just flashes off his muscles to the other girls but to Bell he goes into conversations about books and such and I also think he picked her because he sees how she takes good care of her Dad he felt she would do the same for him.

He saying he wanted alot of boys is not so uncommon of the time period it is set in. And he did own a tavern and was a big Hunter so he could easily provide for any amount of kids they would have.
And she never gives him the smallest of chance to show he isn't this brute she thinks he is. She brushes him off every time. And when he purpose yes he did kind of push too hard there but yet again he was a man of his time. When he sees she is in love with a hideous monster but won't even give him the time of day he goes crazy. I feel even if the beast was just some average guy Gaston would still of tried to fight him.
I never believed Gaston wanted to own belle like a trophy exactly. I think to some point he loved her. And he went mad when his heart was broken.
Also I think that if belle would of actually gave him a chance she would love him just as much as the beast. Just like the beast she could of molded Gaston into a great man. I believe Gaston would of been one of those husbands that when thier wife say I want this or that than he say anything my wife wants my wife gets. She would of got her library and everyone respected Gaston so if he said to start reading the town's people would all have a book like belle in the opening song. He may even provide a better school for the kids if belle asked. Gaston had the power to better the town if belle was with him to lead him to what to do. Gaston was just like the beast but he owned a tavern not a castle.
Gaston and the beast is a product of their time period and up bringing. This is really a story of what can happen if you show love and compassion to a person and what can happen if you close someone out and show you do not care about them.
The beast had the love of the castles people and Gaston had the love of the towns people. The beast had no mother and we never hear or see Gaston's mother so she might of been gone as well. The beast circled himself with yes men and throws party's where they were all about him. Gaston had a right hand man as a yes man and Gaston had a tavern just so he could have drinks with his people every night and like the beast center stage by the fire seats his throne.
Honestly the beast and Gaston was almost exactly the same except the beast had a castle. And I bet if the magical fairy went to Gaston's door that night chances are it be called Beauty and Gaston lol and the beast would been in Gaston's place in the story.
But if you recall the beast forced belle to stay with him. Like people like to say belle developed Stockholm syndrome. But I feel if Gaston was turned into a beast Belle would of seeked him out after maybe seeing him by accident and wanted to help him and in doing so would of had developed the florence nightingale effect. Where a care giver falls for the person they are taking care of.
Honestly I think Belle was doomed to always have to choose between one of these two men and which ever man she would of eventually chosen she would of had a happy ending.
And this is why I never looked at Gaston as a bad guy just a guy who was missunderstood
There is the fact that if belle chose gaston over beast in the world where beast is still a beast he most likely would have rampaged the town. Were-creatures can really do some killing when they are mad.
Were-creatures are extremely resistant to everything except silver and are extraordinarily strong. I really doubt he has silver bullets ready to stop a rampage.
Plus I think Belle would of told Gaston they should trap the beast and try to help it. And because Gaston does what ever Belle wants Gaston would of tried to catch the beast. Because like I said I think deep down Gaston loved Belle.
I'm really passionate about this movie so here we go. Gaston desires Belle because she's the most beautiful girl in the village and the only one not interested in him. I can't say whether he really loved her or not but he is shown to love himself more. He never listens to her and disregards things she cares about (throws her book in mud, has her father sent to the asylum). No matter how many times she says no to marrying him, he thinks he can /make/ her say yes (You may say he's a product of his time but women in pre-revolution France had a surprising amount of agency in marriages and any normal man would've taken her rejection). As for Stockholm Syndrome, there's absolutely no indication that Belle has it. She only treats Beast with kindness when he stops abusing her and only falls in love with him after she leaves. He yells and acts petty to her and she yells and acts petty right back instead of submitting. When he tells her she can leave, she does so without hesitation.
You're one of my favorite FSers. That little thing wouldn't bug me if it was someone I don't enjoy. If you keep doing it, I'll have to keep getting my twitches out, I guess. :P
@matthewg lol aww really I'm one of your favorite. Ok how about I promise to TRY MY HARDEST to remember it is would HAVE not would OF but if I do it again just say twitch lol. Because I admit that was very funny. lol
I feel like in 9 out of 10 stories Gaston would have been the hero.
Falls in love with quirky girl, quest to marry her, (ignore the locks-up-her-crazy-father bit), rallies town when she comes back with blatant trauma, (tries to) defeat monster previously holding her prisoner (losing life in the process)
I would have to agree with @unicycle. He does ridicule the things she holds dear. Man of his time or not, that's not how you show love to a person. He just wanted her because she was the best girl in the village and his ego told him he must have the best at all costs. That said, I don't think he went after the beast out of jealousy. I think that was just some sort of trophy hunting thing.
