Every time I see this plant all I can think of is Farscape and how the Scarrans can only live on planets where this plant grows.

This is great because I am also 37yrs old and just learnt this today.

Go back to your original way of thinking. Birds of paradise (the actual birds; there's several different species) are known for their whacky feathers and elaborate mating displays. Here's an example:
