I think the pose is a bit of a cheat, but I imagine the weight of the wings would have been insanely hard to compensate for if the bird had been standing up or such

there are ways around it... like not having the wings spread out in the first place. Even then some reinforced concrete and hollowing it out in the right spots would work.
