I haven't actually seen the movie yet, just the trailer, but here's something I've been wondering about for a long time. Hollywood tries so hard to make more female-friendly reboots/sequels, but in the end, isn't that kinda sexist? Like, in the case of Ocean's 8, in the trailer they mention that the main character of this movie and the main character of Ocean's 11 are siblings, right? But that kinda gives the impression that women can't be successful without being somehow related to a successful man first. Not that I actually think that, I'm just trying to show how this SJW logic could easily backfire. Why not make an all female movie similar to Ocean's 11 but just let it be its own thing? As far as I know, Ocean's 11 isn't SUCH a cult classic that they'd feel the need to hitch a ride on its fame, would they?
I saw the movie, and it honestly was good! Although I thought it would be preachy and trash the reputation of the series for the sake of feminism, the all females choice makes complete sense in the narrative. In fact, I don't think they tried to make an all female reboot - rather, I think they just wanted to make a film about another Ocean and once they decided on Debbie they realized that it makes the most sense narratively to have her select an all woman team.
That's actually really good to hear! I was afraid it'd be another Ghostbusters lol (though, even that movie wasn't as bad as I expected it would be, it's just that it felt like there was no reason for it to exist)
