I mean, it's not like any of the alliances with the US are doing *well* at this point-- outside of Russia. This will hardly help. But, then, you can't attack people the way he does and not expect some kind of backlash
This is what I've found so far for information about why this is happening:
This balloon wasn't actually approved immediately. It was initially turned down because it wasn't considered a valid protest, but that changed when it had support petitioned by thousands of people in the city.
Also, apparently this has a lot to do with terrorists attacks in London that left 7 people dead and nearly 50 injured. The mayor of London told people "there is no reason to be alarmed about the increased police presence" after the attacks. Trump retweeted the quote completely out of context. He left off the "police presence" bit, and chose to make it appear as if the mayor was telling people not to worry about terrorist attacks, rather than not worry about increased security
Apparently at some point Trump also tweeted something to do with a video about Muslims. I haven't seen this tweet, have no idea what's in it, so I'm not verifying this at all, but the mayor of London claims it was anti-muslim propaganda. You'll have to hunt it down yourself if you want to decide if that's accurate or not. The mayor of London is Muslim, though, so if the video WAS anti-muslim, you can understand why he might have a problem with it.
Either way, it looks like it's been another political shit-show between Trump and someone else he's pissed off/who doesn't like him, and it got to the point the mayor apparently said Trump should not be welcomed into London at all, and warned that if he DID come, he would be met with protests
I don't really know where this leaves us, since we all know how well Trump has taken any slight jab at himself in the past, and this is a bit more than a slight jab
Yeah, I remember the anti-muslim videos.. they were taken way out of context, in different areas from where they say, some of the people weren't even muslim and the dates were all wrong.
The anti Muslim videos were from the Far Right 'Political' group Britain First who are known for their bigotry and false information they spread. The leader and deputy leader have also been convicted/imprisoned a few times.
Well, someone did say that fox news potentially took the "no reason to be alarmed" quote out of context first, and then Trump just jumped on the bandwagon. But I have no idea if that's true. Even if it is, he should, as leader of the free world, have a bit more common sense than to just repeat something like that without verification of the context first. Or, at least, I would think so.
The whole thing is kind of just a huge run around "he said/he said" once again, and it's too tiring to keep up with it all
Well don't come whining to us for help when shit hits the fan next go around, last I checked my history Britain would've been a German territory not once but twice without the backbone of the united states military machine.
I feel like, if Germany had succeeded in conquering all of Europe, there's a chance they could have eventually conquered America, too. I'm not saying America didn't make a huge difference in the war, or trying to invalidate their efforts. But considering how hard and long Europe had already been fighting, comments like this seem to invalidate their *own* efforts in the war, and that hardly seems fair either.
Everyone lost a lot, and probably would have lost more without the efforts of all the countries involved. And considering what Hitler was doing to the people and countries he invaded..
If America wants to turn it's eyes away from something like that, based on a protest against a man who tried to use a horrifying terrorist attack to start unfounded drama against the mayor of London, then that will easily be one of the most depressing days in the world's history.
Not to mention that America has also received support in various ways from a lot of other countries over the years, as well.
From what I've seen of Americans, though, most of them are good people. Proud, free-spirited (emphasis on free because I'm pretty sure it's a capital offense if you forget to do that), fun-loving, with good senses of humor, and justice.
I don't believe in, support, or remotely like Trump. But I think America, whether they support him or not, is better than, and can rise above his antics. It's one of the greatest nations on earth, and a minorly bruised ego has never been the kind of thing to hold them back before
That's just my impression of them, though
