Here we go again. If the question is on estimation because they are teaching the kids to do estimation then doing the actual math is an incorrect answer. Yes, it’s more precise. Yes, the kid did more than they had to. I get it. But it’s still the wrong answer to this particular question because they were supposed to be learning a technique to do estimation.
Then choose a different number for the basis of the question, rather than the actual mathematically correct solution! Sorry, this is on the teacher, not the student.
I doubt the teacher made the test. They have testing material provided to them. However just because the answer happened to line up correctly doesn’t give the student license to answer it differently than the directions stated.
It shouldn't be taught over precision when precision is possible. Precision > estimation every single time. What I find funny is I just said there are exceptions to every rule on another post. This is the exception to the rule that there are exceptions to every rule. Postception.
But you don’t get to make that call in context of this test’s grading. Every test you take in school has the same basic rule: follow the instructions. Doesn’t matter if your answer is better if you go your own direction, it’s still wrong on that test.
People get upset at stuff like this because they think teachers are being unfair to the kid for thinking outside the box but the teacher is trying to teach them a specific method. If they don’t follow that method then there is no way to prove they understood it which is the purpose of tests.
as guest pointed out below, even by the teacher's method the kid is right.... based on any interpretation.
So... the teacher WAS being 100% unfair. It's a loaded question.
It's also a fucking retarded concept to teach as well; still. It's like trying to justify teaching someone how to poop while doing a handstand... because they can. Like... what the fuck? Why?
There is also the point that it undermines the entire point of math and science. Math and science aren't like english or eve P.E. (my basketball coach just gave everyone a 95 so long as they showed up, but obviously some players were better than others) there is no objectivity. Teaching semantics like horizontal or vertical subtraction/division is bullshit. If the method works without exception it is valid. Period. Just because the teacher is butthurt about how a problem is solved doesn't mean the answer is wrong. About the only real complaint is not showing your work, which this kid did. Fuck this "teacher".
There is a mountain of reasearch that shows that what method kids learn to do math at the basic level directly affects their proficiency at higher level math so it isn’t bullshit. That’s why schools change their teaching approach in elementary school now and again; to make things better in high school.
And if the teacher wanted to be 100% unfair they would have marked the answer wrong. Which they did not. They deducted a single point. Since this is question 9 it’s a reasonable possibility for this to be a 10 or 20 question exam but even at 50 the student got half credit for their answer.
Sounds fair to me.
I have a mountain of evidence that says scat smells like roses, prove me wrong. And... just.. WHAT? Fuck it could have been a 200 question test if we are going to pull out bull like that. I've had em... and a -1 doesn't automatically mean they deducted one point. I've had it mean the entire question is wrong, the teacher was just trippin, got pissed, was marking other shit, the school didn't allow X in math because... well fucking algebra. There are a number of explanations.
The point is that if it’s a short 10-20 question test then this deduction is not going to affect their overall grade by itself. The teacher is being fair by giving credit for the answer being right but also making a token penalization to make a point.
If it was a 200 question test then this would be the equivalent of two questions being wrong.
I know all this because I learned a valid method in elementary school to solve basic math problems. See? It works.
And I’m going to guess you don’t have a mountain of evidence proving your olfactory claim. I think you were just being silly.
subjective* Sometimes I get subjective and objective switched :x
Anyway... No... it's not fair. The right answer is the right answer. 2 question test or 200 question test be damned. Math is objective. RIGHT ANSWERS ARE RIGHT. If you want to go into method, if the method can be applied 100% of the time and work... it's fucking right.
Also... notice it asks for a reasonable answer, NOT AN ESTIMATION. In what universe is the fucking correct answer not reasonable?
FUCKING BIZZARO WORLD TWIGHLIGHT ZONE BULLSHIT GAAAAAAHHHH FUCK. This is the kind of shit that makes me fed up with the world and want to drown myself when I go skinny dipping.
Your argument is not well structured and your reaction is overly emotional. I’m starting to wonder at this point if you really have a significant mastery of funk. Tell the truth. Are you fronting, sir?
No. 105-30=75
If we want to play that fucking game
Or 100-25.
Also 70 and 75 are close ESTIMATES of one another when in the context of book pages, so either way you spin it, the answer is fine. The explanation needs work.
