Technically he was converted to data so he didn't travel at all. Just got remade.

do the star gates do the who data conversion? i thought they worked more like space folding or wormholing

Yeah, in the first couple of seasons, the coldness of space is actually addressed, and you can see frost on them when they exit the stargate. It isn't mentioned as much after, like, season 3 of SG-1.
