There are a few tricks to it. The first one is to simply make sure your contribution is understood. You don’t want to be the person who is ALWAYS talking about how hard and long they work- especially since one can argue that “with proper time management you’d finish your work in your allotted hours.” We all know in this modern age companies often demand more than a normal human can give consistently long term in a regular shift- but it’s still an argument that you’d be on the losing side of. Instead- work it in organically. We all hope our work will just be noticed- but it isn’t. As unpalatable as it may seem, you pretty much have to advocate your work to make sure it’s noticed. So you can work in to status reports, meetings, or casual conversation about it. Things like: “man- did you know after 10 our key cards don’t work? Last night I had to ask the security guard to let me out.” Or- “Hey, are you ever here when the night janitors come? There used to be this sweet old lady...

.... and I haven’t seen her lately. Do you know if she’s ok?” There are sideways methods to bring up you were working late without saying it. Once in awhile you should just say it- “I was here until 9 working on XYZ, so it should be ready by....” and even if you aren’t struggling sometimes just pretend you are. It not only makes people more able to relate to you, but it’s easoer for people to relate to the fact that you are working hard on an emotional level. There are more underhanded job specific “tricks” that can mask leaving early or arriving late, but if you actually are using your time wisely and working hard, the above should help shot it enough that when you approach your boss and say “everything is done for today” or “I just I have a few loose ends to tie up tomorrow, but the heavy lifting is done” and you tell them “since I’ve been here xyz extra hours this week, I was hoping it would be alright to leave at x:yz ocklock....” any good boss should be more receptive.

Because if everyone left 10 minutes early, then you'd have no one there for 10 minutes. It's not hard to realize why that's a problem.
