I got an iPhone at 15 because of safety reasons and I still use it today. I got it as a hand me down from my father after my Mom threatened child support
So? Nothing in a developing child’s life should be unregulated. Every generation has some kind of complaint from the one before. My parents thought the amount of time I was on my computer (pre-WWW) was unhealthy. Before that it was too much television.
My kids learned to count by two and read fairly easily by four because I gave them an iPad with education programs on it. It’s not the screens, it’s the content that you have to regulate. Don’t blame the iPhone. Blame the idiots on YouTube who create mindless videos of Fortnite or filling the worlds largest water balloon and then jumping on it.
Age 6 she got a phone that was only full of app games and couldn't call anyone.
At 9 she got a phone because she took the bus to and from school. But she had to hand it to her teacher during class the school let kids have phones as long as they handed them in in class. Once at home we took the phone.
Just at age 11 was she given a new phone that she can use as a real phone and talk to friends as long as all calls happen in front of us.
We only did this because of how good and responsible she was with her school phone.
.
As for make up that is only for play and Halloween till she is 13. Though she gets a few pimples and gets embarrassed so I cover them up with foundation.
.
And as for screen time the rule is she has to spend 2 mintues outside playing or reading for every 1 minute on phone/computer/tv
Tbh I started to wear makeup (lipstick&nail polish) OCCASIONALLY when I was 4... and I still do it only occasionnally, it didn't turn me into a doll, a brat or someone who hates herself. It's paint, that's all. But then parents should probably introduce it as such, stuff for when you want to decorate yourself or celebrate sthg, and not something to hide yourself behind. Also, as with anything, kids should be aware that it's not something to judge others by : they should not look down on friends who don't wear makeup (or those who do wear it).
Regarding the phones, I think the key is letting kids know their values : financial (=take care of that shit) and personal (=a tool for communication, not sthg that should replace human contact).

Gotta take an interest in our kids' lives and find things that'll help them enjoy learning.
