But what if it got canceled and then returned, a la Family Guy, Primeval, and Futurama?

When I read "I'm talking 13" I was expecting the next line to be "seasons of Supernatural". But you really make a good point. The beginning of 13 reasons why was so awful and boring with a shitty message it made me legit angry (which is hard) and I stopped in the middle of the 3rd episode.

These things work on popularity. The content seldom matters. If the the show is ravely popular then it's bound to get an another season, even though it's shitty. The shows on the other hand which are great/good, but are not as much popular would be laid off. Sometimes it happens that, shows are both popular and good, but they are still cancelled (the recent stunt Fox pulled with B99, Lucifer, etc.) that, I don't know why the production house does it. @guest_ any idea?

Its also about politics and internal manuvering. It came out after Firefly was cancelled (a few years after) that Fox had only picked it up as a placeholder for another show that wasn't going to be ready until midseason. They never intended for it to be a success, it was never meant to survive past half a season, not that they told anyone that. As for Lucifer, it was owned and produced by a separate studio so Fox decided it wasn't worth the cost. I'm sure the pending Disney deal had NOTHING to do with the cancellation of a show literally about the devil himself.

Why is "your show" in quotes?

It might be an insert show here thing? Or mocking people who act like they own the show because they're a fan of it

I don't think they're mocking it, just trying to be clear they're talking about "your show" as in "your favorite show" and not as in "the show you've created".

Blatantly not true. At the end of the day it comes down to how much money is the show making? If it's not making money? Cancelled. If it's making money but not enough to reach an arbitrary line set by the network? Cancelled. If it's making enough money? Continued. This is the only criteria the network cares about. Ratings, popularity neither of these matter past making the network money. Also, you have to remember the people making these decisions are human. If they "think" a show isn't making enough? Cancelled and replaced. Older show made more money than new one? Cancel new one and move on to next new one. Networks are not nostalgic they won't re-launch a show because people ask or because they may have ended it too soon.
