Mixed feelings. Some drivers are jerks and the desire to spite them is strong- and they arguably deserve it. On the other hand, that has a high potential to upset them and lead to road rage, possibly getting them, you, or an innocent bystander hurt or killed. If you see someone who wasn’t there a second ago, or can tell someone is obviously wanting to go faster, get over or use a pull out. No one should tail gate. It’s primitive and dangerous as well, but throwing gas in a fire doesn’t make it safer. Instead of tail gating, flash your high beams- the universal signal for “please get over.” Give a person time to notice you, they don’t lowly drive looking at their rear view and hopefully check it periodically. A slow driver may be elderly or handicapped, or simply not confident or able to control a vehicle, and they are driving within their abilities. Provided it isn’t dangerously slow (like 35 in a 65 on a clear day) it’s annoying but safer and faster than them crashing in front of you.

You make good points against following someone too closely. I try be cognizant but when people are actually being egregious, I'll make a crazy pass or start being the jerk tailgater.

Lol. I just do the crazy pass. No ones perfect right? But I figure a crazy pass gets us both out of a situation that could escalate or be dangerous- so I justify that as being safe and go for it (with bonus points if I can do it in a really abrupt and obviously aggressive manner....)

Before I got my truck fixed a few years ago if I went over 60 the AC would make awful noises (squirrels had put nuts in some of the things) and going above 65 caused the console to shake (more squirrel related problems.)

I've always wondered if people even realize that they're following too close... They might think that they're following at a safe distance when they're not

They don't realize diddly. They drop in like marbles down a chute. Like marbles.
