The post asks about how “polite” people are, not how nice. You can be one and not the other. But that said- it’s subjective no matter what. Politeness is an adherence to manners. Some places it is polite to slurp or belch at a meal, others it’s impolite for example. So if two people each cane from one of these cultures and didn’t know or care for the others customs, they would both assume the other was impolite. Even within a country manners differ. In a city like New York, the small time it takes for basic pleasantries to a cashier at a busy business could add up to huge delays down the line of people. So it’s polite to get what you came for as soon as possible. Someone from a small southern town may think those New Yorkers are rude for not chatting a little, and the waiting New Yorkers may think the southerner is rude for coming as a tourist and holding up theor daily lives by not respecting the culture of the city and hurrying up. Cultural ideas of polite vary greatly.
On the one hand, I've never had someone stop dead while jogging to try to start a fight with me about feeding birds in America.
On the other hand, I've never had a group of four large men with neckbeards openly eye me up next to the display case of hunting knives, shotguns, and brass knuckles spelling "HATE" in a gas station in Canada.
On the third hand, I've never been to Europe.
As a side note, I don't think Canadians are as nice as everyone thinks we are-- especially when we're driving.
That said, I have a friend who emigrated from Egypt, and more than once I either caught him in an annoyed mood or annoyed him myself and when I asked what was wrong he said "you people say you're sorry for everything! Why are you sorry all the time??"
Took more effort than I'd like to admit not to apologize for that
