I don't actually know anything about the Boer War - The Sequel (a learning opportunity!). It sounds like it was still largely Britain's idea though

The British Empire really understood the value of strategic landmasses. Almost every overseas colony had strategic maritime purpose. Gibraltar South Africa Falklands Rhodes Hong Kong Suez. Each is located to a major and vital shipping lane or passage all to serve the purpose of trade from India and China.
