It’s believed based on studies that most cats seem to just like people, even if the cat may be best likened to a human “introvert” who enjoys people but in doses they can control and based on mood. They may not want to interact or be interacted with, yet still just want to have a person close by. Further studies show cats have a type of “mirroring” behavior. If they see you are focused on a computer, tv, project, etc- they may not fully understand it, but they often want to be a part of it, and so when they see you seemingly just sitting there next to a computer, they too will sit next to or on the computer- many of these devices or objects also give off warmth or some concealment- which cats tend to like, and so it is possible they infer that is the purpose of the device and what your interest is. It’s theorized that dogs understand we are a different species but cats just think we are big cats. So from their view they think we are mentally and social deficient but just shrug it off.
