It’s a common logical fallacy of humans- or more precisely, a convergence of several. People tend to think of themselves as exceptions to the rule. “Society is full of idiots...” “people are selfish...” except largely them of course. No, when we argue, we are intelligent in a sea of morons. When we disagree, those who can’t see our logic must not have the capacity to understand. Yet- at the same time they are thinking the same of us, and we all know this, yet repeatably we fall into these sorts of things even knowing they exist. When you are driving fast you “aren’t going that fast,” or a million other reasons why you are in control and under XYZ circumstances it was safe. When someone else does it they are a maniac. When your friend does something bad- people need to understand they are a good person and had reasons... when some stranger does the same thing- they are awful and deserve to be punished. And odds... oh man. Don’t get me started. Humans are terrible at math...

... few people are intuitively able to conceive and understand math in the real world. Las Vegas or any of the casinos and analogs world wide are prime examples. If people were better at math, these places wouldn’t be in business- or not nearly as profitable at least. Most people think that 50/50 are good odds! Those are terrible odds. It isn’t even that a majority of people don’t, at least on some level, have the concepts of science and statistics that shape the world around them, even the most well educated or intelligent people can easily get caught up in life and be so focused on specific moments that they don’t actually apply what they know to a situation, instead acting reactively on instinct. Of course- at the end of the day, most people need these types of fallacy to maintain their mental health. A certain level of self delusion is inherent to the human condition, or at least the concept of “self” as it exists in our society today. We can’t help but ascribe emotions to things..

Should we just ignore the BS that 25% of accidents involve texting. The number is based on distracted driving. And that includes speeding and DUIs. Texting isn't a big deal. Should you text while driving? No. But 1 in 4 accidents aren't text related.

... a dispassionate and unbiased critique for instance, giving the positive and negative aspects of a thing- it is not an insult or a compliment necessarily- just the closest thing to truth the observer knows on the subject, yet most people will either take it positively or negatively based on their own views. Tell someone that theor performance in be was adequate. See how it goes. There’s nothing wrong with adequate. It is sufficient in quality and quantity, content and resolution. You do not require and may not desire much more than adequate, and few things are always terrible or exceptional. Yet- tell a person they are an adequate lover or spouse and see how that goes... there are other examples of course. The point stands though- human beings tend to gravitate to a subjective reality, often where they are central to their model of the universe- and given our limited perspective of only seeing the world as ourselves- that is somewhat inherent to the condition of humanity.

@this_isntme- a very good point. What’s more- there isn’t a really “proof positive” way to say how many accidents truly involved distracted driving, a certain number would go unreported as distracted driving, and a certain number of those reported as “distracted driving” as the cause would be misreported or assumed that it was a distraction- especially in fatal accidents where records or other means are used to reach the conclusion. You shouldn’t text and drive... or eat and drive... talk and drive.... really... to be perfectly safe no man or machine should drive. But in a sort of “happy medium” it’s certainly not likely going to help you drive safer or better to be on your phone while operating a land missile feet or inches away from other humans and solid objects.

True-ish, but if I never text and drive I'll never instigate an accident because of it. It's also true the chances of winning the lotto are ridiculously low but if you don't play you have a 0 in 0 chance of winning. So the moral of the story don't text and drive = no accident don't play the lotto = 0 chance of winning. Text and drive = relatively high chance of accident, play the lotto = extremely low chance of winning. "So you're telling me there's a chance." - Lloyd Christmas

I know myself, it won't be me because I don't drive yet and will never text and drie, it depends entirely on me. 0 chance in 302,575,350 of that happening.
