Yes. Although doing this is actually less battery efficient. The 1 battery will die faster from the extra strain and you'll end up using more batteries than if you just use them 2 at a time.
I'd honestly be surprised if it works.
More than just the total charge, there's probably not enough voltage. AA batteries are designed with 1.5v per, so the mouse needs roughly 3.0 to run. There's probably some circuts in there that won't even switch properly...
