They do actually. If you have a really nice dinner table like my family does (its 100 yrs old). It helps preserve and protect the surface from damage like from knives, spilt wine and small children.
Disagree. I know several people who have or bought "nice tables" and then they ALWAYS have it covered with a table cloth. What is the purpose of a nice table then?! I'd rather have it be seen and enjoy the nice table (plus avoid all the laundry from the tablecloths). If it gets damaged over time, so be it. That's literally how everything works.
I have a table, chairs, and hutch that is from my husband’s great great grandmother. Anything that’s been in the family for generations must be preserved. Hence....table cloths during meal times.
