I am sometimes thought of as pedantic- but this is the importance of language and the importance of active consumption of media. French police have been deployed with rifles and live ammunition. At least of this moment I can find not even a rumor that the police have USED rifles and live ammunition. Now- this is probably more shocking in a country where police do not routinely carry side arms let alone long guns- but the way this is written is sensationalist and shows a clear bias. It is irresponsible journalism that is meant to cause emotional intensity to rise during a tense situation. The emotions such a headline are meant to stir are negative ones towards the government response. The addition of this “fuel” to a smoldering flame could easily lead to a raging fire that could leave people emotionally and physically damaged or even dead. But that would also sell more news. This is why journalists and salespeople often make me sick. Professions with noble intent perverted to scum.
Nah, you're right, in this case it's important to make a distinction.
And I gave up on old-fashioned journalism a while back, prefer to get my news from independent Youtube journalists.
Against TOS because it is news, political, or wrong? Personally I don't think any of these are justification, as long as the primary focus of the site remains on memes. I would say that news and political content are fine because you can joke about virtually anything. And in cases where stuff is flat out wrong, you will essentially need to fact-check all news related content, and we are kinda doing it anyway. No point in deleting the post after that, especially if the comments corrected the factually incorrect parts of it.
Many people don't read the comments.
Not to mention that users shouldn't be forced to read comments to figure out what is intentional bullshit, and what is not.
Then it's a question of who moderates it and why do we trust them. And it's not one I really want an answer to either. Because this is the internet and who here believes in accountability.
I’m with @vitklim on this one. I understand your thinking @matthewg- and I think it’s coming from a good place. But vitklim covers the bases pretty well. We reach a pint where we can argue almost anything having a political agenda or being topically political. Then it comes to arbitration and that means that a singular entity has control of what is and isn’t acceptable- and that almost always means that which suits their politics or leanings gets an easier pass. Regardless there’s much room for abuse, and it not only causes undo censorship, but also would remove most may current event based posts and isolate the site in a bubble. Controlling information is almost always a path to controlling thought. Besides- it’s “funsubstance” so bu and large we must accommodate what many people think of as “fun” with some boundaries of course- but as few as practical for communal enjoyment. My .02 anyway.
So what's the news here? German and Austrian Police were deploying special forces, armed with sniper and assault rifles, during the Hamburg G20 Summit on day 2.
Come back when somebody got shot without provoking it.
And just one thing about those yellow vest thing: it's entirely undercut by far and extreme right rioters, who since months only have the aim of destabilising the country and who by no means are fighting for the good in this world.
