When I was a kid there was 2 little old ladies who lived in a house on my grandparents block. They told everyone they were sisters. They lived there since they were in their 30s. My grandparents moved into their house just 10yrs before the "sisters" showed up.
So they were there when they moved in. My grandmother saw them move only one bed in the house. When she asked they said hers broke in the move and they will be ordering a new one. It never came. lol
When one the "sisters" passed away they had to go inside to get her. They never let anyone inside their home. They never had relitives over. They claimed to be orphans.
Anyways. Inside they found only one bedroom being used as a bedroom with one bed.
My grandmother went over with a cake after and told her how sorry she was that she lost her soul mate.
Continued...
The old woman grabbed my grandmother and hugged her and she just cried and cried.
My grandmother told my mom that the two women must of had no one they could tell. So when the one died the other was left all alone.
A few years after my grandmother died the other woman died. They are both burried side by side in the town cemetery. Marked as sisters.
From my understanding their family members threw them out and never had any contact with them.
Only a very select knew they were not sisters. It was the remaining woman that had the tombstone made. She had it say sisters so they could share a tombstone. With one last name instead of 2.
This happen in the late 90s marriage between 2 same sex couples wasn't legal yet. So she did what she could to let them share a name and a tombstone.

Man... it's such a shame they didn't live long enough to be able to actually get married. May your grandmother and these women rest in peace knowing that things are better now.
It just now hit me that my elderly neighbors in the apartment across from me who lived together were actually a lesbian couple and not sisters like my parents told me. I cannot believe I just now realized this. Holy shit
Ok for like 90% but can we still believe in deep friendship? I don't mean to belittle gay relationships obviously, but we can't assume that everyone who has a really close friend is having a romantic and/or sexual relationship with them.

Omg, thank you for saying this. When I was like 6-7 I met my best friend Sean.. at least he was my best friend for a few years, and back when we didnt know anything aside playing together outside.. I thought wed be friends forever and one day live in the same house with all our other friends and just do cool stuff all the time...
Not the case
You're welcome! It's a shame society has romanticized and sexualized every relationship. I need a word stronger than like sometimes, you know? But if you tell your friends you love them (while sober), then boom! A wild ambiguity appears, and brings her sister awkwardness.
And yup I feel you, I had a college best friend for 5 years, we'd do everything together and every-fucking-one (including teachers) thought we were closeted bf/gf. We did kinda live together at some point, as he stopped bothering going bad to his dorm room after a while, but a lot of people didn't know that.
