I don't understand. Boy scouts and Girl scouts are pretty much identical activities wise except one is exclusive to girls and one is exclusive to guys. There's even just Scouts which is co-ed/whatever you identify as. We don't need another identical Girl Scouts with a different label, the label doesn't change or empower anyone or anything.
this is sadly false. Girl scouts dont tend to get to do stuff that boy scouts do. It usually just ends up being them selling cookies for a few months out of the year and then going on a trip to a theme park or something as a reward for selling a lot. Boy scouts "usually" get to actually learn stuff and go into the woods and do stuff. There are always exceptions to that with some girl scout groups doing actual cool stuff and some boy scout groups that never leave the town but the majority of them fit the mold pretty well.
Must be different in America cause all the Scouts groups around my state (granted majority of them are Co-ed) mostly focus on survival activities and leadership roles.
@bethorien thanks for saying "usually"
My Boy Scout troop was awful and we only had fun when we ran off from the assigned knot-tying activity to go on unsanctioned exploring trips.
I feel like you should just make a new Scouts called "We Actually Do Scout things Scouts", where everyone can join and you actually go on adventures and camping and learn how to survive.
the boy scouts tried that and the girl scouts sued them for trying to go gender neutral saying that losing the distriction that had been there for over 100 years was infringing on their copyright and said that it was unfair competition.
also a lot of people were all like "but they are going to fuck non stop"
Jesus christ just because boys and girls are near eachother doesn't mean their gonna become rabbits and get it on like there's no tomorrow. Also I didn't even know there was competition between boy scouts and girl scouts, they're two separate organisations why should it matter what the other one is doing?
Another reason why they would want to be in boy scouts is because the highest badge they get can count for college credits. Some colleges accept the Girl Scout golden badge as well but since, like you said, they do less survivalist is things and it’s more just cookies sales and field trips to Glizt and Glam(it’s a children’s salon. I’ve been with my old troop. Not the best place for scouts.) a lot of colleges don’t consider it equal to the Boy Scout one.
In my country, there's just one group called "scouts" and you can choose the activities/things you learn yourself, no matter your gender.
From what I understand from other convos where this was brought up, in the US boy scouts and girl scouts do fundamentally different things. Boy scouts learn how to survive in the wild and other actually useful skills, girl scouts sell cookies. So I definitely understand why many girls would prefer to be in the boy scouts. That said, I'm not sure if this is the right approach, it'd make more sense to reform the scouts and make the organization(s) similar to what we have in my country (and other countries in Europe). But I guess many people don't want that because of tradition, plus it'd probably be a longer and more difficult process.
they are two different businesses both of which are totally for profit. They don't have any actual affiliations other than the name. As i said above when the boy scouts tried to go gender neutral the girl scouts sued them.
@silvermyth Charity work is nice and all but again what if you instead want to learn how to survive in the wild, or vice versa what if a boy wants to bake cookies and sell them for charity?
@bethorien Yeah ok that's some backwards ass logic from the Girl Scouts organization.
However, since they are for profit businesses, couldn't they be prosecuted on the basis of the Customer Non-discrimination Act? You gotta pay for membership in these, right? That's how they profit?
girl scout trips are almost never as good as boy scout trips (less money spent, less likely to have anything to do with scout stuff, etc)and boy scout trips happen a lot more often. They are tend to have a lot more options on stuff they can choose to do and as katty said above boy scout stuff counts for college credit when girl scout stuff often doesnt.
