It’s actually not that strange. The most common cause of law sucking is injury. It doesn’t have to be plainly visible either. Dogs can get yeast or other types of infection or irritation of the feet which cause discomfort, and the natural reaction is to use their moth on what they perceive as a wound. Barring that however- dogs are known to do this as a sort of comfort gesture. It’s usually exhibited in dogs that have endured emotional trauma, especially certain types in their formative years. However particularly sensitive or justification dogs can develop this behavior as well. It can transform from a comfort gesture to an attention seeking gesture however if they notice they get attention for doing it.

Perhaps a nail that was clipped to far as well? I mean, saliva does heal wounds faster.
