I thought cats meow at us because they learned over the years being domesticated, to imitate the cry of a baby, noticing that babies are treated well being taken care of and fed. As well, house cats clearly rely on us for food, I do not think they are lacking understanding in the department of “a kitten shouldn’t be able to feed me.”

One of my cats sometimes goes through the motions of meowing, but doesn't actually make a sound... at least not one I can hear. o_O O_o

They also say when they hiss... with the ears laid back, they are imitating snakes.

When she was a kitten, our orange one would meow silently while looking us in the eyes. It took her a few months to figure out we can't hear her, now she meows audibly like the other two cats we have. I sometimes miss the silent meows...

just go watch my roomate is a cat and you'll know. dont worry, i assure you that Haru-chan, the cat, won't turn into a loli or anything, she's simply a cat.
