The first time I heard that word was in Buffy, when I starting listening to it in original version. I always thought "english* people are so bad with food they call a vegetable eggplant haha" and just assumed it was an oddity of the english language... Thanks for proving me wrong!
...Now I gotta see why we have something called "head cheese". (that's the random bizarre word the translators chose in Buffy).

Yeah that's kinda obvious, I was wondering about the cheese part!
(Turns out "fromage" (cheese) comes from the latin "forma" which means form, but also "to be molded" and this particular food is indeed molded. That's really disappointing, I expected better, but that's the truth.)
