You're right. The Vietnamese were mostly untrained and non violent people until the americans attacked and they defended themselves as best they could with basic weapons while the americans continued to attack with top of the line weaponry. Then still needed to be rescued.
the Vietnamese had been fighting for 4 years before america got involved. We didnt attack, they revolted against the french and fought against more than one world power before their "communist" government got officially recognized by china and the soviet union which america responded to by going full boots on the ground in accordance with the truman doctrine to prevent the spread of communism. They didnt have "basic weapons" they got most of their gear (at the time of american involvement and for a time before and arguably from the beginning) from their soviet and Chinese allies which in a lot of cases are far better weapons for that terrain. The soviet weapons would survive some of the harshest treatment you could give them in the jungle.
Vietnam was one of the best functioning 'communist' societies, and the states attack anything that might prove that capitalism is not the only(nor the best) option.
