There's a great post somewhere about how little we actually know about Jesus's physical description; that all we really know is that he was a man, bigger than a breadbox, smaller than a house.
Idk why people today would think he looked white either. He was a middle eastern dude, apparently anthropologists think (based on the profile of the average man in that area at that time) that Jesus was short, stout (in a muscular sense) with brown skin and curly black hair and a beard.
People just personify Jesus (and Mary too) as their own culture and race. In Asia, He's portrayed as Asian. It probably helps people relate to Him better.

Historically, that's what people did, and it's reflected in old depictions of Jesus. I was specifically talking about people today, we have all this scientific proof of what he most likely looked like and people still get offended when you mention he wasn't a white tall dude with blue eyes.
