Pretty sure we're heading for a Shadowrun-esque corporatocracy. Not really much we can do about it, though.

The defining attitude of a generation - outrage, disappointment, and dismay at the direction of society but so long as people can watch cat videos on their phone and order new dish soap of Amazon for 10 cents less while they take a shit - they’re happy to watch the world burn

In response to the guest, more people exist in the world outside a single generation. Your comment doesnt really convey anything outside your disdain for others.

thats the defining attitude of like 3 generations. Its also the majority attitude of at least 10 generations back. The people that protest and get things to change in the history books are a heavy minority even in their own minority. Most people are perfectly happy to sit and do nothing as long as they cant see the effects of that as a 100% direct result. Thats how it has been since humans have been humans.

Yeah- that’s how systems have mostly always worked. A few people at the top with the most, a lot below them with way less supporting them- given trinkets or diversions or “protection” etc. to keep them in line. You don’t see the types and magnitude of things like terrorism or revolution in societies with strong governments and a high standard of living. If you give people things they do not want to lose, they are less likely to risk what they have for the possibility of some abstract idea of more. People at large tend not to barter the tangible for the concept of ideals- that’s why when someone does so they tend to be held as a hero by many or respected for their convictions. If it was so common we wouldn’t bat an eye at it.

But it is at its core a philosophical question. The world has always been shaped and guided by those with power- with the absolute source of power on earth traditionally being derived force or threat of force. The strongest person gets their way until enough weak people form a team that can oppose that guy- then they get their way until someone controls enough resources to pay a force large enough to over power them. Then they get their way until... and so it goes where there is no version of governance we know of which is effective that doesn’t inevitably place someone in power.

Like the Communists overthrowing the imperialists for their decadent abuses and cruelty only to themselves do the same, we see it in the history of France or America or any number of places. We see it on elections with promises and deeds- the “grand conspiracy” is simply that rich people like being rich and want to stay that way and make sure their families stay that way. What’s good for one rich person tends to be good for others and so even without collusion they often work in tandem towards the same ends because those ends keep them at the top. There’s no need to get hopeless or put down a generation over the entirety of human history. Life isn’t about “fair” and what do I care if someone shits on a good toilet? I don’t want a good toilet. Don’t look at others and say they have more so it’s not fair. “Fair” isn’t we all have the same- it’s that we can all hopefully have the things we really want.

She was murdered with a car bomb. They weren't messing around. She left behind a husband and three kids.
